Enterprise Device Management for Remote Learning

Built and managed a centralized device program supporting the rapid shift to remote operations at scale — standardizing procurement, lifecycle management, and data systems across the agency.

When remote operations required rapid scale, a city agency needed to manage devices for over one million end users — almost overnight. RCI built and operated the Central Device Management program from scratch, standardizing procurement, automating asset validation, and establishing a capital refresh program across the entire agency.

The Situation

In response to the shift to remote operations, a major city agency faced an urgent need to manage and distribute computing devices to over a million end users and thousands of staff. Existing device management processes were not built for this scale and lacked standardized approaches to procurement, asset tracking, and lifecycle refresh.

The agency needed a centralized program that could handle procurement, manage end-user devices, validate asset tags across systems, and support a capital lifecycle refresh program for all computing devices.

What We Did

RCI built, designed, managed, and implemented the Central Device Management program. The team established centralized workflows and processes, built an operational support structure, and created a standardized approach to device management across the entire agency.

The solution included automation of all device data validation and certification, ensuring asset tags were valid across agency systems. RCI also designed the program for future scalability, including a capital lifecycle refresh program and integrated data systems supporting field locations and administrative offices.

The Impact

  • Centralized device management supporting remote operations for over one million end users.
  • Standardized procurement and lifecycle processes for all computing devices agency-wide.
  • Automated device data validation and certification ensuring accurate asset records across all systems.
  • Capital lifecycle refresh program established for long-term device sustainability.
